Voices of the Ancients: Behind the Scenes with DotA's Voice Actors

When players dive into a match of DotA, they're greeted by a cacophony of battle cries, taunts, and character quips that bring the game's diverse roster of heroes to life. Many of these iconic voices originated from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the game that DotA was modded from. Here is the four voice actors who lent their talents to some of DotA's most beloved characters.

Michael McConnohie — Voice of Kel'Thuzad

Michael McCon

«Voicing Kel'Thuzad was a unique challenge,» Michael recalls. «How do you give personality to an undead lich? I decided to blend cold intelligence with a touch of dark humor.»

Michael's approach to Kel'Thuzad's voice was to create an air of ancient wisdom tinged with malevolence. «I wanted players to feel both awed and unsettled when they heard him speak.»

One of Michael's favorite lines to record was Kel'Thuzad's taunt: «I've been waiting a long time for this.» He chuckles, «It's simple, but it conveys so much menace and anticipation.»

Quinton Flynn — Voice of Kael'thas Sunstrider

Quinton Flynn

For Quinton, voicing Kael'thas Sunstrider was all about capturing the character's nobility and arrogance. «Kael'thas is a prince, a powerful mage, and he knows it. Every line had to drip with that sense of superiority.»

Quinton reveals that he drew inspiration from Shakespearean performances. «I wanted Kael'thas to sound like he was always delivering a dramatic monologue, even in the heat of battle.»

His favorite memory? Recording Kael'thas' iconic line: «The time is now! The day of reckoning has come!» Quinton grins, «I got so into character that I knocked over my water bottle with a dramatic gesture. We kept that take because the energy was perfect.»

Ed Trotta — Voice of Malfurion Stormrage

Ed Trotta

Ed brought a sense of ageless wisdom to his role as Malfurion Stormrage. «Malfurion is this ancient, powerful being deeply connected to nature. I tried to imbue his voice with a sense of calm strength and deep respect for the natural world.»

He also shares an interesting tidbit about Malfurion's more aggressive lines. «It was a fun challenge to show Malfurion's warrior side without losing that underlying serenity. Even in battle, he maintains his connection to nature.»

Ed's favorite line? «I am the voice of the Earth, and I will be heard!» He explains, «It encapsulates everything about Malfurion — his power, his connection to nature, and his determination.»

These stories offer just a small glimpse into the artistry and effort behind DotA's voice acting. Each character's voice is a crucial part of their identity, helping to immerse players in the rich world of the game.

Elisa Gabrielli — Voice of Tyrande Whisperwind

Elisa Gabrielli

Elisa brought a unique blend of strength and compassion to her portrayal of Tyrande Whisperwind. «Tyrande is a priestess, a leader, and a warrior all at once. I wanted her voice to reflect all of these aspects of her character,» Elisa shares.

She recalls the challenge of balancing Tyrande's different roles: «In one line, she might be offering a prayer, and in the next, she's rallying troops for battle. It required a lot of versatility.»

Elisa's favorite moment came when recording Tyrande's ability calls. «Shouting 'Starfall!' with all the power and majesty of a Night Elf priestess was exhilarating. I felt like I was actually calling down the stars!»

Next time you play DotA, take a moment to appreciate the voices that bring your favorite heroes to life. Behind each battle cry and witty retort is a talented actor who helped shape the game we all know and love.
