Origin

The EV1 originated from the ´´Impact´´ prototype that GM unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 1990. This prototype was developed in response to growing pressure from regulators and consumers for cleaner and more efficient vehicles.

Launch

The EV1 was released in 1996 and was available exclusively through a leasing program in select cities in California and Arizona. The car was equipped with lead-acid batteries in its initial version, with an improved version released in 1999 using nickel-metal hydride batteries, offering greater range.

Characteristics

The EV1 was known for its aerodynamic and efficient design, with low air resistance that improved its range. The car could reach speeds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph) and had a range of between 70 and 160 kilometers (44 to 100 miles), depending on driving conditions and battery type.

Opinions

Although the EV1 was well-received by renters and garnered praise for its performance and technology, General Motors decided not to sell the vehicle directly to the public. In 2003, GM pulled all EV1s from the market and ended the leasing program, sparking controversy and protests from electric car advocates and owners.

One hypothesis was that customers would no longer have so many expenses in repairs and fuel consumption and therefore the company decided to cancel it. In addition to not being necessary to continue focusing on electric vehicles due to the decrease in regulatory policies on electric cars.

Legacy

The EV1 left a lasting legacy despite its brief life on the market. He is considered a pioneer in the electric vehicle industry and helped pave the way for future developments in this technology. The history of the EV1 was documented in the movie ´´Who Killed the Electric Car?´´ in 2006, which explored the reasons behind its withdrawal from the market.

The General Motors EV1 was a major milestone in the evolution of electric cars. Its story reflects the challenges and opportunities in the transition to more sustainable mobility.
