Former assassin John Wick is devastated after his wife Helen succumbs to a terminal illness. To help him cope, Helen arranges for a beagle puppy named Daisy to be delivered to John after her passing. John quickly bonds with Daisy, and they spend time driving around in his classic 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. During a stop at a gas station, they encounter Iosef Tarasov, the son of the Russian crime boss Viggo Tarasov, who wants to buy John's car. John refuses to sell, which enrages Iosef. That night, Iosef and his thugs break into John's home, steal his car, beat John unconscious, and kill Daisy.

Iosef takes the stolen Mustang to Aurelio, a chop shop owner, to get the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) changed. Aurelio recognizes the car and punches Iosef when he learns it was taken from John. When John visits Aurelio, he confirms that Iosef is Viggo's son. Viggo is furious when he hears about his son's actions from Aurelio. He punishes Iosef, explaining who John Wick is: a retired legendary assassin known as "Baba Yaga" ("The Boogeyman"). John had earned his retirement by completing an impossible task that greatly benefited Viggo's syndicate.

Viggo tries to persuade John to spare Iosef, but John refuses. To protect his son, Viggo sends a twelve-man hit squad to John's house. John defeats them all and hires a professional cleaning service to handle the aftermath. In retaliation, Viggo places a $2 million bounty on John's head and approaches Marcus, John's mentor, to take the job. Marcus hesitantly agrees. John then digs up his old weapons and gear from beneath the concrete floor of his home and checks into the Continental Hotel, which caters to criminals but enforces a strict no-violence policy within its premises. Furious, Viggo doubles the bounty for anyone who will break these rules and kill John inside the hotel.

The Continental's owner, Winston Scott, informs John that Iosef is hiding in the Red Circle nightclub, guarded by Viggo's men. John storms the nightclub and nearly kills Iosef, but Viggo's top henchman, Kirill, intervenes. Injured, John returns to the Continental for medical care. Ms. Perkins, an assassin, tries to kill John in his room to claim the bounty, but Marcus warns John in time, allowing him to subdue Perkins. Perkins tells John about Viggo's front operation, and John leaves her with another assassin, Harry, for punishment. Perkins escapes by killing Harry.

John then targets Viggo's front at a church in Little Russia, destroying his money and blackmail materials. Viggo's men capture John as he ambushes them. As Viggo ridicules John's attempt to leave his past behind, Marcus intervenes again, helping John escape. John forces Viggo to disclose Iosef's location after eliminating Kirill. John also compels Viggo to cancel the $2 million bounty. He then tracks down and kills Iosef along with his guards.

Ms. Perkins informs Viggo about John's connections with Marcus. Viggo retaliates by confronting Marcus at his home, torturing, and then killing him. He calls John to inform him of Marcus' death and sets up an ambush through Perkins. However, Winston intervenes and has Perkins executed for breaking the Continental's rules by killing Harry.

Winston tips John off that Viggo is planning to flee by helicopter. John intercepts Viggo, kills his remaining henchmen, and engages Viggo in a brutal hand-to-hand combat. John allows himself to be stabbed to get close enough to kill Viggo. Wounded, John goes to an animal clinic where he treats his injuries and adopts a pit bull puppy that was about to be euthanized. John and his new dog walk along the boardwalk where he shared his last moments with Helen.
