Lung cancer currently ranks because the leading reason for cancer related death in men and women. Although continuing to say no in males, incidence rates remain stable in women, following an increase throughout the 1990's. Trends in cancer of the lung related deaths, are largely attributed to trends in smoking in the last several decades. In 2008, the American Cancer Society estimates 215,020 new cases is going to be diagnosed and 161,870 deaths due to lung cancer will exist in the United States alone...

Traditional treatment for cancer of the lung are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, ans photodtnamic therapy.

Your treatment will depend on what kind of lung cancer you've, and just what stage your cancer is at (how serious it's).

When it comes to surgery… there are many types of surgery for lung cancer, for example pneumonectomy (where one entire lung is removed), lobectomy (where a section «lobe» of the lung is removed), a segmentectomy / wedge resection (where a part of a lobe is removed), laser surgery ( where a high-energy laser beam destroys the cancer cells inside a tumor).

When it comes to radiotherapy… this therapy uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Rays can be delivered by a machine that directs the high-energy rays towards your cancer, or with a small radioactive pellet that will get implanted in or close to the tumor.

In the case of chemotherapy… means taking anti-cancer drugs, either by swallowing them or by injection. A number of chemotherapy drugs may be administered via a vein in your arm (intravenously) or taken orally. A combination of drugs is frequently given in a number of treatments over a period of weeks or months, with breaks in between so that your body can recover.

In the case of targeted drug therapy… these are newer cancer treatments that actually work by targeting specific abnormalities in cancer cells. Targeted therapy options for treating cancer of the lung include...

Bevacizumab (Avastin), which stops a tumor from creating a new blood flow. Blood vessels that connect to tumors can supply oxygen and nutrients to the tumor, letting it grow. Bevacizumab is usually utilized in in conjunction with chemotherapy and is approved for advanced and recurrent non-small cell lung cancer. Bevacizumab has a risk of severe bleeding.

cancer vaccine

Erlotinib (Tarceva), which blocks chemicals that signal the cells of cancer to grow and divide. Erlotinib is approved for people with advanced and recurrent non-small cell cancer of the lung that haven't been helped by chemotherapy. Erlotinib negative effects include a skin rash and diarrhea.

Doctors are getting better at diagnosing and treating cancer of the lung, which means people with lung cancer possess a better chance of recovering and living longer. Still, lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It is important for those who have cancer of the lung to know what to anticipate and also to arrange for the future. It's also important to remember that not every lung cancers are identical, and that the treatment or the prognosis for just one patient with lung cancer may be very diverse from the next person with lung cancer.

Many people choose to use alternative therapies as cancer of the lung treatment rather than conventional treatments or medicine, because when one starts to realise why cells have become cancerous in the first place, it makes sense to try and reverse the process.

For instance, everyone knows or ought to know that a weakened defense mechanisms results in cancer… while a strong immune system seeks out and destroys cancer cells. For most in your life, the defense mechanisms has successfully handled cancer cells, killing them off because they developed. That's its job. For cancer to have coded in you, your defense mechanisms must have become worn out, ineffective and not able to deal with the cancer cells.

As a result it is vital in your battle against cancer to bolster the immune system. Particularly if you are getting medical treatments that eliminate the immune system, making your body more acidic as well. Many supplements and a healthy diet supports the immune system. Another concern is to ensure that you take enough. Cancer of the lung is not something to pussyfoot around with.
