After the successful release of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, New Line Cinema decided to produce a new trilogy which will be a prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and will be based on Tolkien's earliest work about Middle-earth, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.

The first film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was released on December 14, 2012.

the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, was released on December 13, 2013,

the third film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, was released on December 12, 2014. Actors such as Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom reprized their roles in the new trilogy.
